I’m mixed, so I’m a little obsessed with these reader profiles. Some of the already fascinating stories of mixed heritage become even more so when you realize that in many places outside the U.S., it’s a complete non-issue. In these places, there’s no notion of “passing”—or even of “mixed”—because nobody frikken cares.
This sort of cultural relativism—and recognizing it as such—can be at once uplifting and heartbreaking. We all need to travel more, if at all possible. And cruises don’t count.
